Tarrant Appraisal District said it is giving property owners more time to file tax protests and business personal property renditions after website issues tied to a cyber-attack.

Tarrant Appraisal District extended two tax-related deadlines Friday after delays affected its online tools following a recent cyber-attack, the district said.

Property owners now have until May 24 to file property tax protests, and until May 15 to submit business personal property renditions. TAD said the changes were made because the protest dashboard was not available on time and the online rendition tool was unavailable.

The district said property owners generally have 30 days from the date they receive their valuation notice to file a protest.

TAD Chief Appraiser Joe Don Bobbit said the online protest tool has been effective and that several hundred people have already negotiated their property values through it. He also said the district expects intermittent website issues to continue and recommended using the site before 10 a.m., between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., or after 6 p.m.

Bobbit said TAD has been improving its website and moving it to a new host, but that work was delayed after a cyber-attack last month. He said the current website version has not been compromised and said the situation is not a repeat of last year.

TAD also created a call center for questions and for residents to check whether a letter was mailed to them. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1-800-939-4170.

TAD has not said when all online services will return to normal.
