SEC creates financial reporting and accounting enforcement unit

The SEC said the new unit will focus on accounting and financial reporting fraud, auditing misconduct, and related enforcement work.
The Securities and Exchange Commission said it is creating a Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within its Division of Enforcement to focus on accounting and financial reporting fraud, as well as misconduct tied to accounting and auditing.
The agency said the unit will give enforcement staff dedicated expertise, focus and capacity in cases involving financial reporting fraud and related wrongdoing. It said the team will work with staff across relevant SEC divisions and offices so enforcement of federal securities laws aligns with the Commission’s policy goals.
The SEC said the unit will be staffed by attorneys and accountants with specialized skills in financial reporting, accounting and auditing in securities regulation.
SEC Division of Enforcement Director David Woodcock said he had been assessing staffing since returning to the division. He said the new unit expands on the division’s current and historical efforts to crack down on bad actors in the accounting and auditing profession and will be critical to pursuing financial reporting fraud and accounting and auditor misconduct.
The SEC said Timothy Zimmerman will lead the unit. Zimmerman joined the Division of Enforcement in May 2026 as senior advisor to the director. Before joining the SEC, he worked for 12 years at an international law firm and most recently served as deputy general counsel at an international accounting and professional services firm.
Osman Nawaz, the SEC’s principal deputy director of enforcement and head of specialized units, said he looked forward to working with Zimmerman and described his experience and passion as assets.
The agency did not announce any new case tied to the unit. It said the unit will begin operating within the Enforcement Division with attorneys and accountants focused on financial reporting and auditing issues.
